The “AC Allergy” Trap & Indoor Air Quality
Improving your indoor air quality in Las Vegas is the most important step you can take for your health as June temperatures soar into the triple digits. While retiring to the air conditioning provides relief from the heat, it doesn’t always guarantee relief from allergens. In fact, many patients at the Allergy & Asthma Center report that their symptoms—such as a persistent cough or nightly sneezing—actually worsen once they start staying indoors more frequently.
When we seal our homes against the Mojave heat, we inadvertently trap indoor pollutants. The most common culprit is the dust mite. These microscopic organisms thrive in the soft surfaces of our homes, such as mattresses, carpets, and upholstered furniture. Because Las Vegas residents often use humidifiers to combat the dry desert air, they may accidentally create a humid microclimate (above 50% humidity) that allows dust mites to colonize.
Furthermore, your HVAC system acts as the “lungs” of your home. If your filters are not rated correctly or changed often, the system simply recirculates old skin cells, pet dander, and trapped spring pollen. To truly optimize your home, we recommend:
-
Upgrading to MERV 11+ Filters: These are designed to catch smaller allergenic particles.
-
Maintaining 35%–50% Humidity: This is the “sweet spot” that keeps your respiratory tract comfortable without encouraging mold or mites.
-
HEPA Vacuuming: Regular cleaning with a HEPA-certified vacuum prevents allergens from being kicked back into the breathing zone.
